Attempting the art and craft of the short, succinct blog post and My First Contest!

If i cd just write less, i suspect i'd post more frequently. So here goes, poor typing and punctuation and all. First, Happy Memorial day! I worked at the hospital for about 6 hours, til a colleague asked me to trade a few hours of today for a few hours of tomorrow. So, i even got out with my family a bit. Yay!

It was a spinning bonanza for me this weekend. Friday night, the lovely Steph and Elizabeth came to spin with me. I'd scoured and dyed some fuzzies for Steph to use for her batts, so it was like a business meeting, yeah, that's it. When i take some pictures, i'll show you the delicious core-spun yarn i made from the fluffy, soft, beautiful baby cakes she brought me. yay! baby cakes! Elizabeth came, i believe, to m ake us laugh so hard we almost hurt ourselves. Get her to imitate her children for you, seriously.

Sunday, lauren had her monthly spin-in, which was stuffed to the gills with fabulous spinners. if I list them, I'll miss a name, but I will say that Sarah, fate the third, was there. more yay! Did I tell you she and gryphon have become partners? now there ae two talented dyers behind the Sanguine gryphon name! And they have some other very big plans as well. as soon as i have a link, i'll send you to Moxie. Go ahead, ask them. It was history also, because it was the last time we'll all be together before the lovely lauren is a mommy. I can't wait to meet the little angel; and, oh, i think it may be time get knitting! only a few weeks to go. I think i'll shut up now, cause i never know who might be reading...

have I told you that jess, that BunnySquirrel herself, is making me a website as we speak? It is not clear yet what i/we have gotten ourselves into 9to me, at least) but I'm hoping having a geeky hisband will some how help.

So, here is where I need you. I need help figuring out a "color scheme" as we speak. I just can't seem to narrow things down. i know i don't want pastels or primary colors, but there are so many fabulous hues to choose:) That's why i dye stuff.

Here are some of my favorite Dragonfly yarn pictures. Please let me know in the comments what colors you think will work well as my color theme/website color scheme. Ok? I have some pretty new spinning fiber and some yarn to put up on my site, hopefully tomorrow after i send Jess some write ups she needs for the site. so, leave a comment with some color help for me and the merchildren will put all of the names in a bowl and choose a name randomly. You'll have till the end of the the week. the winner will get to choose a skein of yarn or a braid of roving from my etsy store. ok?

In addition to looking for an update this week on my etsy shop, if your a Baltimorian, you can now find Dragonfly spinning fiber at Spinster Yarns and Fibers. Go by; it's a lovely little yarn shop. I hear their spin in is pretty great, too.

I like the fourth picture down for its artistic layout--the in-focus/out-of-focus thing and the flat angle look great. It is a calming colorway, too. However, I think your res and pinks are your most popular color--the Villainess, Bougainvillea, etc. You might want to go with that end of the spectrum, and then throw in an accents from the far side of the color wheel.

diane_s said...

I like the fourth and the fifth photos but that is because I like those blue/ green sea foam ocean kinda colors. So i would be attracted to a beachy sand and sea calm color scheme. But maybe I am odd .

Pat K said...

Delurking to say that I'm tremendously in love with picture three. Anything even remotely autumn immediately grabs my eye. Then I'm intrigued by the last one as well, reminiscent of beach walking. But I think the fifth one would make the most interesting color scheme. I'm just not a pink person. I say picture five as my vote.

Sarah said...

Kate, I just love the fourth and fifth photos, they're so gorgeous! If I absolutely HAVE to choose one, I'll go with the fifth, but they're all so pretty. And congrats on the new site! I can't wait to see what you and Jess come up with.

APlanet4Creation said...

I like the 5th picture. Those are the colors I think of for dragonflies. Good luck on your site. Check out The Switchboards for fellow women in business.

I would go for the third one down, the colors are warm and inviting.

Sligo said...

I think I would go for the colors in photo 3 or 7 for the most part, perhaps with colors from photo 6 to highlight. Don't want a bright color combo to compete with the product images. Lovely photos!

Fluffykira said...

I like pics 3 and 4. Good luck with whatever you pick!

Umme Yusuf said...

Love the colors in pic 5!

Carrie said...

I LOVE the 3rd one. I am partial to the orangy colors and I also think they look better on computer than the blues.

Jessey said...

Jewel tones - i absolutely love deep, rich colors that look like a handful of semiprecious stones, and the first couple pictures in particular jumped out at me as having that same sense of brightness, but depth and clarity, that I'm always drawn to.

nestra said...

I like the third pic, the colors are rich and warm. So inviting!

Funky Monkey said...

pictures 3 and 7 are particularly lovely!

emberchyld said...

The last photo-- the colors are sufficiently subdued for a webpage (people need to read without it hurting their eyes!), but they really POP against each other. I'd personally go with the slightly brown-tinged green as a background, the darkest bronze/brown as borders or any title text, and variations of the other shades throughout. Lovely

Junebug said...

I like the fourth and fifth photos - maybe because those are some of my favorite colors... :o)

Debbie said...

I really like the 5th and 7th pictures as color inspirations. The lighter colors may make a more suitable background for a website -- less distracting maybe?

alligator said...

I love the last picture for a color scheme, lots of greens with a hint of brown/orange. I also liked the brown/orange/pink scheme in the 3rd photo down. I agree with the above that you definitely want a light color for the background and personally I prefer it to be light enough that the text can be black and easy to read.

Good luck and I'm sure the new website will be beautiful no matter what color you choose!

catmum said...

I love dragonflies! and I'm voting for the 5th photo...it gives you a lot of range for colors and accent colors, and definitely plays on dragonfly colors as the tie-in.

Hester said...

I really like the sixth one. The colours really POP and my eye was immediately drawn to it. I think that it ties in well with the colours you have for the site.
But of course, all of them are winners!

kaos said...

I like how the colours in picture 3, 4, 5,6 & 7 reminds me of nature in Norway; autumn in the mountains, summer at sea, raspberry bushes and playing at the beach. Good luck with your new site and wonderful yarn. If I should pick one picture it would be the 5 or 6, The close up really makes it easy to see the quality of the yarn and colour.

Mo said...

I love most of your colors and have the proof in my stash thanks to the Loopy Ewe! :)
I would like to suggest a tool that I use that you may find helpful.
http://kuler.adobe.com/
It's really helpful with setting up theme colors and very easy to use.
Good luck!

Kati said...

I really love all the pictures. But I would have to go with picture 4 - there is something very eye catching in the colors and the focus of the picture.

Tori said...

That fifth picture down is a colorscheme in itself, and it is so lovely. I vote for that one

Robin said...

I was going to suggest blues and browns, but the 7th picture does it for me. I think the lovely aquas would be perfect for backgrounds and then the tans can be used for borders.

momdlux said...

Oooohhhh, the third photo justs sings!!! The warmth of the coppery color blended into the other colors is stunning! Good luck with your new website.

Diane

floderten said...

I like the colours of the third and fourth pictures. As for colour suggestions, it's a good idea to keep the background in muted, light colours and the text in a bolder colour. If you have a logo, you could use colours based on that. :) I think graphics could contribute to the design, as long as it's not taking over the site, if you know what I mean?

In the end it all comes down to what image you want to have. I would suggest earthy, cool colours as they seem to appear more professional. But in the end you should go with what makes you feel comfortable and represents who you are. :)

Megan said...

The fifth photo is the one that speaks the most to me. I think you should take that and expand upon it.

mazhalai said...

me votes for the 6th one.. love the pink and green watermelon effect.. ummmm watermelon..

Jo said...

I love the fifth photo. The blue shades at the back of the skein would make a lovely background color, reminiscent of sky or some particularly lovely rivers I've seen...

ME215 said...

For me, it's the 5th picture down Kate. The black, browns, greens and blues are beautiful and give you both more muted tones and brighter ones that pop!!! And you know what a sucker I am for blues and greens. ;)

I'm so happy that Jess is building you a site too. Can't wait to see it.

gurganus said...

Narrow it down to three colors, max. I'd suggest a warm brown, a coppery red-yellow, and a nice blue-green. Web colors can somewhat limit you. I suggest having an off-white or white background so your product photos can pop.

donna said...

I love #7. I think it would make a lovely colorway for a website. Any of the colorways shown would be lovely and each would lend the website a different character. I just like the sort of serenity that #7 has.

Susan said...

Kate,
My favorites are #'s 4 & 5. I am totally in love with Rocky Top colorway. But those two colorways do remind me of Dragonflies. If I were to choose which yarns best represent the colors of Dragonflies those would be it.

Knit Witch said...

I vote for #5!! Very unique. Also - are we friends on Rav? I couldn't find your username so sent it to me if ya would! :)

knitnthings said...

Hi! I came to visit from Sarah's site.... I LOVE the colors in #4 & #5 I think they would make a lovely rich color palette for your web site. Congratulations on the move :)

Number 7 is my very favorite colorway, but I think for the website 4 and 5 would be beautiful. They seem the most like dragonflies, and I love how moody they are.

#6-Such bright, colors-perfect!

smart1g said...

I like the 4th photo down...the blue and green remind me of real dragonflies, and I love the way the shot is laid out.

Ray said...

I LOVE the colors in the third picture -- but for the yarn I'd want to use, you can't beat picture 7. That said - the colors that you might choose for your website might include the colors from Riptide. I hope you are having fun!!

gingy said...

I had a thought about this on Sunday night, knowing you hadn't decided. The colours of a dragonfly's wing are beautiful and irridescent, and reminiscent of stained glass. Maybe there could be some kind of stained-glass detail somewhere.

And sheesh, 'entoasts' is my verification word. Whee.

gingy said...

Oh, and... I'm always, always going to choose Sailor's Warning or Riptide.

Jana said...

WOW! I am amazed with these. I always love me the pink, they are all gorgeous. Oh man the blue is so pretty too. Your color sense is amazing.

Julianne said...

They are all gorgeous . . but I like photo #4 because it has your tag on it . . puts the yarn in perspective. Not just pretty yarn, but YOUR pretty yarn. And they are nice dragonfly colors.

Laura said...

I agree with what many others have said. #5 is my favorite and reminds me most of dragonflies. Dragonflies rock, by the way.

Kim said...

Oh, pictures 4 and 5 are the ones I would choose... the deep tones in #5 make the other colors really pop. Those colors are exactly why I love to dye wool and mohair. And silk. And rayon. and.....

Galad said...

I like picture 3 for the warm tones and subtle layers of color. Picture 5 seems the most like dragonfly colors to me also. They are all beautiful!

Sharon aka catsnrabbits said...

I like the third picture down with the muted orange, brown and mauve colors. While your pinks are fantastic, I think that they would overpower the screen. Pretty, but more neutral colors is the way to go IMO.

ikkinlala said...

I like the fourth and fifth pictures, and green and blue make me think of dragonflies so I think that might be a good colour scheme.

Mia said...

What no Dragonberry colorway? Actually, I think it would be a bit hard to see. Same goes for Bouganvillia. (See not being able to spell is not limited to you.)

Personally, I think the Vamp (green yarn in photo #2 in case my mind has gone too) would be best. It is nice and neutral for you. It will be easy to read and see with a good contrast. Contrast is very important so that we your adoring public can read the site. I tend to not visit or buy from sites that are too dark.

And now I need to go and work on your socks. Dragonberry is calling to me

Kitty Kitty said...

I think my favorite would be the last one. Using something like;

8c3d35, d2f0c4, 555e55, 767a5a, c2c173

Jenn said...

I like the last two the most, as I think they'd provide good readibiltiy. If you are framing the text with color, the fifth is beautiful - I do think black text on a light background works well.

Carla said...

I like 4 and 7 best. The last picture is probably the best because you don't want the colors to compete with the yarns.

Patti said...

How about a rainbow, start with Bouganvillea, then Azalea, etc, ect

Marla said...

I am confused. Are we to choose a photo? If so Dee at Posh Yarn changes her photo every week. It is a treat to see which colour she selects. If we are to look at the photos and pick one for an overall colour scheme...
I really like the 4th photo from the top.

Nancy Tarr Hart said...

Some really great ideas...but I'd like to suggest one of your colorways that isn't pictured--I bought spinning fiber from you at the MDS&W Festival earlier this month...it was named "Starry Nights" and it has spun up to be absolutely incredibly gorgeous...not too bright, subtle, mystical, magical, and yet very eye-catching and, well, it just draws you in..... Good luck!

Mary said...

When I think of dragonflies I think of black, green & blue, like the yarn in your 5th photo. All of your yarns are gorgeous, picked up 2skeins last week.

photoknitdog said...

I like the third picture down and the last picture. They're both gorgeous.

roghblog said...

Hi, it's Ro :)

How about something like these colors?

Jessica said...

I like the second to last picture. They are all lovely, but to me, it gives you plenty to work with for a site design, and is very "you," based on what I've seen of your dying.

Kristi said...

I love the colors in the 3rd photo. Looks very much like the "Rusted Root" I just purchased from your Etsy shop. I think it is beautiful and would make a wonderful color scheme for a web page.

Anna said...

I'd say the 5th picture, as it's the colour of dragonflies. But I'd use more of the greens and blues and less of the browns for a pretty webpage.

HatboxRose said...

The fifth one appeals to me the most, not too bright, but great depth of color in there. Good luck with the website!

Indiecita said...

I think the first, second or fourth photos represent (what I've seen of) what you do best. I think they would go with your logo better as well.

deazinn said...

I like the fourth picture. The colors are calming, and easy on the eye, which would make the site easy to read.
The first is too bright, and will be distracting. Still beautiful, but too bright for a website.

By the by, I have two skeins of your yarn from MD Sheep and Wool, in Summer Kisses....it's so beautiful!!

mamachris said...

#5 is the most magical. I see little faeries riding on fireflies, and baby elves playing with dragonflies. (Really!)

Melissa Lemmons said...

I really like the third and sixth pictures. The browns and peach and brown and sea-foam are both calming color combination and are light enough colors that the website will be easy to read. Also, they are colors that are not likely to turn people off. While your red yarns are beautiful, lots of red and hot pink on a computer monitor makes my eyes hurt and I am not likely to stay around.

bunnysquirrel said...

Whee! What a great idea, Kate. It's great to see so many people with thoughts on the site! I'll put together a few mockups tomorrow based on these photos so we can get a better picture of how the lovely yarn will translate into a site theme. Of course I think the site should be in the BunnySquirrel colorway ;) but we'll find a way to make the winner work. I'm very excited about everything coming together and hope you all love the new site!

Anonymous said...

I like photo #4 because of the calmness of the photo. It reminds me of water. In addition I like #6. There is something very feminine about the green and pink together which I like very much.

Mary V. said...

I like #5 and #3 best. Your reds and pinks are beautiful but I don't think monochromatic is the way to go here. Good luck with the new site, whichever colorway you choose!

Kitten With a Whiplash said...

Picture three is my favorite, and I think coppery, rosy, and rich woody hues would be an excellent color scheme. There is a feeling of elegance and splenour to these colors, but at the same time there is the inviting coziness of a warm hearth.

One Sheep said...

Dragonflies are most often associated with sparkling, iridescent blues and greens. To balance these I think simple shades of slate and lighter grey would be attractive. Just be sure that everything is easy to read, for instance, no pale text on pale backgrounds.

Lisa said...

The fourth and fifth pictures say dragonfly to me. The soft greens would make a lovely background with iridescent blues and shades of rust and browns as accents. The seventh picture is beautiful too and would fit in the scheme.

But then again, I love the sixth picture too. The greens and soft pinks with the touches of brown that you do are always among my favorites.

Qbee60 :)

I like the fourth best for a website because the colours of the site should be beautiful, but they shouldn't overpower the rest of the contents.
Susan from Athens

sammysmith said...

Honestly, they are all beautiful, but I have to say the pictures 3 & 4 are my favorites! 3 is so warm and Fallish and 4 is just a beautiful blue.

Anonymous said...

I have to tell you that I love pics 3, 4 &5. But I think the website should have the bluish greens of 4 with a deep true violet contrast -- I would love to see that.
See you at the pool,KC (Karen)

Meri said...

I'm in love with the last picture. Greens are soothing to me... and the brown adds a punch for interest. I think you could definitely go with shades of green and brown. Of course, those are a couple of my favorite colors, too... so I'm kinda biased.

MJ said...

I like the last picture...I think a green/brown earthy tone scheme goes well with the Dragonfly Fibers name. All are beautiful though!

Amanda said...

I really like picture #5 and think that a website designed with those colors in mind would look great!

Christine said...

I like #4 or #5 with either a black background or light blue that will coordinate with the blues in the color you choose.

Wasie said...

I like #3 and #5 because they are calm colors. I don't like a website that is difficult to read or has text that is in very bright colors. One thing about #5 is that it has the lovely blue in it that you can use as an accent color for punch! Whatever you choose, I am sure it will be awesome! Have fun!

April said...

Picture #5 is my favorite. No only do you have the lovely yarn colors, blue and dark ocean-y shades, but the pink background also adds some punch.

Lisa (JeepGirl) said...

I'm a pink girl so I love pic #1.... but I think pic #2 - the greens are so calming....

mhardersen said...

I really like the fifth one. Rocky Top if I am correct..I have a friend going to make a sweater out of that color! I wish you luck on your new website and can't wait to see how it turns out

Beth Gray said...

I like all the pics, although my favorite would be the browns in the third pic down. I think they would make a calming website. And although I like the pinks in the first pic, I think it might be a little to glaring as a website.

AandD said...

I really like the fifth photo. You could do a gorgeous layout with those colors...deep greens and blues with browns and some pops of white to brighten it up. Can't wait to see what you come up with!

Stephanie said...

I love the 5th picture down. It reminds me of a dragonfly!

MsKnottyKnits said...

I love the 4th and 5th pictures! I think that the colors are nice and calming, which is good for blogs - who wants to be blinded by a shocking yellow while trying to look at your gorgeous yarn!

Anonymous said...

brights remind me of you, but 4 and 5 really make me wanna buy some yarn.

I really like #3 and 4 - both are very warm and inviting colors and would work with the rest of your yarn colors. Can't wait to see what you choose!

Ann said...

I like the second photo, and would go with a wide range of greens and golden yellows. Those colors are what most remind me of dragonflies, though I also think "irridescence" and I have no earthly idea of how to capture that!

dragonseye said...

I love the bluey greens of the 4th picture from the top, but I know you can do a glorious murky raku-like purple as well - like the sun off a dragonfly's wings.

Katie said...

I really like the colors from the last photo. Not too bright, which is good for a website (you don't want your customers hurting their eyes!) but still, good, strong colors that are inviting and interesting!

LittleWit said...

I vote for the last photo. Having a couple shades will allow you to segment out different portions of your website if you so choose. :)

Karla, wigleyk@netzero.com said...

I like the third photo from the top. Rich, earthy, warm - a good selection for a website, think! : )

Beki said...

I'd go for the third photo down and use the green from your logo as a background (green is always a comfortable nature color). I'd then pull the red and blue from your logo for accents.

Kathleen said...

The 5th photo has such character and, as someone else pointed out--it is like the color of a dragonfy!

HeidiMonkey said...

Oh I think the 2nd from the bottom is just lovely. The pink and green would make a great color scheme for your new site!

wenat said...

I like the depth-of-field work in photo #4. It's a metaphor for choosing a project -- you focus in on one thing, and the rest turns into blurry, beautiful background.

Angela said...

I think the third photo down - brown, orange, pink - would make a great color scheme for your website. A little variety, but still neutral enough to complement any of your other colors!

Gina said...

I would go with three or six. Love the colors!!

Nancy @ the Jersey Shore said...

I vote for #4. It's gorgeous.

chanala said...

I like 6 the most. I think those colors seem warm and inviting and are great motivation to buy yarn!

Lisa said...

I think 2 and 4 are awesome! They fit a dragonfly, too.

Anonymous said...

Nancy from Iowa
I vote for #5. It has a beautiful range of blending colors with an occasional popof bright color like a dragonfly flitting about the mossy woods.

jokir said...

I personally love #5 but you might want to appeal to the masses and I understand that the purples are whats so popular this year.

Jody said...

I like the 4th, but the 6th is so summery. What if you go with a neutral background and change out the yarn colors with the seasons?

Gracie said...

I love #5 because it reminds me of a dragonfly. Second choice is #7 because the colors are so glorious.
Finally, though, I vote with Jody, who suggests a neutral background and changing out the colors.

You are such an artist!

#4 is my favorite. Both the colors and the angle appeals to me :-)

I vote for the green and pink one. All my Dragonfly yarns have green in them.

I love the colors in the last photo. Also like the third one a lot...but with that one I think it's the sheen in combination with the colors.

And I second a light background with black, or some other dark color, lettering.

And I am thrilled to see you're local to me! I'm up in Timonium.

I like the 3rd, 5th and the 7th pictures. The 3rd and 5th shows the saturation of the colors you can get and the 7th is a more beautiful and unique colorway than I've seen in a while. My favorite of those three would be picture 5 though. Just gorgeous!

I am partial to 2 of the color schemes. The 4th and 5th pictures have really caught my eye. I am love the blue greens, water colors but the multi colors of nature in the 5th picture really entices me. I also love the bokeh (out of focus background to non photographer types)in both but the contrast in the 5th picture really highlights the nature colors in the yarn and makes them pop.

I think a cool, pale blue with a warm chocolate brown would work really well, with maybe just touches of a slightly deeper blue here and there. It's fresh feeling.

However, I also think a crisp, pale spring green would work, too.

Jenna said...

My choice is the green/black/brown/bright blue. To me it has all of the colors of nature: grass earth water and really suits a dragonfly's web environment :)

eyabu said...

This may be too literal but I think the 4th picture just looks like the color of a dragonfly (I know they come in many colors, but it IS the color I think of when I think dragonfly). You seem to favor blues and greens in your dyes so I think that should be your color! (exhales)

Laiane said...

I like the pale aqua and brown combination in the last photo. The other colors seemed too dark for a blog background, and the pink far too bright. The 7th photo is a colorway I would buy for socks for myself, which is probably why it appeals to me.

PassioKnits said...

The pink and green yarn, I want it NOW!!! And the hot pink one is lovely too!

Judith said...

Of course I love them all but my favorite for website is fourth from the top-great soothing colors -bright enough yet not so bright it would detract from other items.

Tash said...

I would say definitely go with the colour palette in the 4th picture - the aquas and turquoises are so soothing and relaxing - will put your customers in a nice relaxed mood, ready to browse through the whole site - and spend money! :-)

aboyer said...

Third photo for me. I'm partial to coppers and love the blends in this yarn. It wouldn't be too hard to use the subtle color changes shown to offset any other text or photos then. more contrast with the important things. . . .

NiteOwl said...

I love the 4th and 5th photos, perhaps #4 a tad more (that is Riptide isn't it...just finished a pair of socks in that!!). #5 has beautiful complimenting colors, too. Perahps BunnySquirrel could add a dab of Flash that randomly chooses one from all these shots when the site first comes up...then everyone gets to have their cake and eat it too! :)

I love the greens in the second photo down, but I also love the mix of colors in the fifth photo. Those two just kind of spoke to me personally.
